Alexandria officer shoots out vehicle's tire to capture suspected carjacker, police report
June 8, 2009

An Alexandria Police officer shot out the tire of a vehicle being driven by a suspected carjacker after the driver nearly hit the officer and did hit one of the carjacking victims, authorities reported.

The incident happened about 7 p.m. Sunday, June 7, at Bingo World, 4810 Lee St. in Alexandria. The suspect, Felton Hurst, 28, of Grand Prairie, Texas, was arrested and charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, one count of carjacking and one count of simple robbery, police said. Two charges listed earlier today were incorrect.

Police said two Avoyelles Parish women – a mother and daughter -- were at Bingo World when Hurst approached them and forcibly took items from one of the victims, including her car keys.

Hurst then tried to flee in the victim's vehicle and nearly struck Assistant Chief James Hay, who was working a uniformed extra-duty detail at Bingo World, authorities reported.

The carjacked vehicle hit the older Avoyelles Parish woman and also hit at least two other vehicles, police reported. Hay fired at the car, deflating one tire and disabling the car. He and bystanders secured the suspect until other officers arrived, police said.

Hurst was booked into the Rapides Parish Jail.
