Upon her Honorable Discharge in 1945, she returned to Alexandria, and awaited the return of her fiancé, Lt. Gordon Gremillion, USA. She and Gordon married on February 21, 1946, and settled in Ville Platte, LA, later to return to Alexandria where she taught school at St. Frances Cabrini Elementary, Providence Academy, and Holy Savior Menard Central High School.

Viva volunteered to be the first white teacher at the all black Peabody High School, in 1968, furthering the cause of desegregation in Central Louisiana. She taught at Peabody for the balance of her career.

Viva was the daughter of the late Durwood Maynor and the late Fannie Mable Holmes Rush. In addition to her husband, she is preceded by her sister, Mildred M. Downs.

She is survived by her children, Linda Gremillion Chandler of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin; Gordon Charles Gremillion, Jr., of Irving, Texas, Richard Carl Gremillion of The Woodlands, Texas and her niece, Bobby Downs Hynson of Alexandria. I so well remember Mrs Gremillion staying after school to tutor me in MacBeth & ???David Copperfield???. She would drill and drill and drill into a closed mind. The patience that woman had, as I look back on it, was astounding! I learned just enough lit to get by, but I will always be impressed with her dedication to helping a student who obviously had her mind somewhere else. In all my daughters' years of education, they had only one teacher who was so concerned with her students' learning. They are a rarity. I could say, "they just don't make them like they used to". But then again, I think Mrs G was even more dedicated than most in her day. Little did she and I know at that time, that some 4 or 5 years later, I would follow her footsteps - not as being a lit teacher, but as something I learned about her --sadly only after reading her obit--by joining the military. Who knows, maybe that drilling had some hidden spiritual nurturing or osmosis effect. It breaks my heart to know that I never got a chance to go back and tell her how much I appreciated her. Sister Anna Victoria was an outstanding teacher and a very happy, joyful person. When she taught me in the sixth grade we had a lot of fun but we also knew that she had some very definite standards and expectations of us, her students. Sister Anna Victoria loved life and took great joy in community living. Her love of music never left her. Up until recently, I would often hear her singing softly as she sat in her wheelchair. Sister Anna Victoria was the Sister who first inspired me to think about becoming a CDP.

Sister Maria Teresita Schultz

Tuesday Musical Club, Inc.
3755 N. St. Mary's St
San Antonio, TX78212

IN MEMORIAM - November 15, 1983

Sister Maria Teresita Schultz (Died March, 1983)

Doris Melba Schulz was born in Falls Church, Texas. As a girl of thirteen Doris came to Our Lady of the Lake Academy in 1915, and her name appears in the year-book of 1915-1916 as a member of St. Cecilia's Harmony Circle, also as an accompanist on a June program. On June 11, 1916 she performed at class-day exercises, playing numbers by Grieg, Heller, and Mendelssohn. During the years her name appears frequently on music programs and in honor groups. She graduated with honors from Our Lady of the Lake High School in 1919. She later received a Bachelor of Music in piano from the College. A Master of Music degree with a Major in piano was awarded Sister Teresita from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1937.

She entered the convent in 1921 and was given the name, Maria Teresita.
She taught piano, chorus, violin, theory and Latin in many schools of the Divine Providence Sisters; in Dallas, San Antonio, Abilene, Fredericksburg, Alexandria, Louisiana, Pasadena and Yoakum, Texas, plus eight years at Our Lady of the Lake High School and College.

She retired in 1972 because of a serious heart condition, and died at Regan Hall, Our Lady of the Lake Convent.
Well do I remember Sister Teresita when I was teaching at Our Lady of the Lake. She never missed a school recital, be it elementary, high school or college students. I loved to listen to her talk about her teaching experience.
Many of our Tuesday Musical Club members are alumnae of Our Lady of the Lake Music School. They remember Sister Teresita with love. At her funeral Mass I heard a choir filled with these alumnae. They sang her favorite choral work; - Handel's Alleluia Chorus.

"Teaching piano was the most glorious thing I've ever done" said Sister Teresita, "and it was the hardest thing to give up when I had to retire. I think as you grow older you become a better teacher. For me, new vistas were always opening up."

Sister Mary Elizabeth was a woman of honesty and integrity with a real sense of responsibility to her ministry and her family. Also, she had a great, wry sense of humor. She and I became goodfriends when we were in high schooL We spent a lot of time playing ball, any kind of ball, and enjoyed being together so much. Her twin sister, Mary Ann, who is now deceased, and my sister and I maintained this friendship over the years. Sister Mary Elizabeth was a dedicated Sister of Divine Providence who placed great importance on her spiritual life. I am sure that she is now at peace with God.
